Condition Monitoring Report
Station Number: NC-WK-185
Station Name: Morrisville 1.5 SSW
Report Date: 12/10/2017
Submitted: 12/10/2017 9:26 AM
Scale Bar: Mildly Wet
Description:
Observation of numerous curbside storm grates this week reveal impediments to drainage including newly fallen leaves, old grass clippings, old pine straw, wood, and other inorganic waste. More than 20 nearby residences were observed with one or more large brown bags full of newly raked leaves sitting on the concrete curbs in the direct path of draining rain/snow liquids awaiting municipal pick up & disposal. The rising creek waters led to more turbulent flow in excess of 2 knots. The creek surface measured slightly more than 6 feet below the bridge walking surface (bridge surface was observed flooding and impassable during 2017 hurricanes). A 6 inch diameter circular mesh kitchen strainer trapped more than 50 small particles (<1/2 cm length)while held submerged beneath flowing ditch waters for 5 minutes today. A flock of more than 10 adult Canada geese and a few mallards found refuge in the rising waters of Grace Park pond Saturday during the snowstorm. Available sunlight during the snow event was very limited and led a few streetlights to illuminate before 4 PM. A great number of power outages were reported in the area. Tourism and recreation at the usually busy park came to a nearly complete halt during the weekend precipitation. Colder dryer air required application of lip balm and nasal passage moisture enhancing health aids this week.
