One inch of rain fell last week, most of it yesterday. After the heavy rain of the previous week, the garden soil finally dried enough to plant corn and beans and transplant tomatoes and squash. Peas and onions continue to grow well. Hiking and mountain biking trails on Mt Greylock are still wet. Bassett Brook and the Hoosic River are both running a bit above normal. The hot weather mid-week brought out breeding American Toads that filled the air with their trilling. More snapping turtles are nesting along the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail along the Hoosic River. Blue Flag Iris, Red Clover, Daises and Ragged Robin have joined the buttercups and asters in the fields. Wet weather has made it difficult for farmers harvesting hay. Mosquitoes and black flies have become bothersome. Tree swallows are sitting on eggs in my nest boxes and wild turkey chicks have hatched. A black bear ripped the front off one of my birdhouses in the back pasture.
